    Learn a new style of leg riding that can be performed by any wrestler.

    Sometimes wrestlers don't feel comfortable having a leg in. NCAA Champion Jordan Leen shows a safe leg series that eliminates the fear of having a "trapped" leg. This simple series promotes safe positioning and turns with little risk. This makes the series applicable to any member of the team. NCAA champions, tall and short, stocky and wiry, have found success with this series.

    Leen guides you through all of the locks, turns, falls, and set-ups. This is a slightly different ride than the traditional leg ride and Leen reveals the secrets that make it so effective.

    The Lock
    Mastering the "Safe Leg Lock" can be accomplished using three key principles. Once the basic position has been mastered, you will learn four different safe locks that can be applied to your opponent's body. After getting comfortable in the safe lock position, Leen shows you how to get the turn.

    Getting the Turn
    From the safe lock, Coach Leen demonstrates two turns to get back points. First, techniques to get a turn with a Turk are shown, followed by getting the turn with a "Jacob's Hook." The key to both turns is that the hips always stop on top of your opponent, keeping you out of danger. He also touches on the possible defenses to the safe leg series. Lastly, Leen works backwards and shows you how to get into the safe lock position from a variety of breakdowns.

    Getting to the Position
    Learn how to get to the perfect lock from a variety of breakdowns including the Chop, Tight-Waist, Claw, and finally the Western Ride. Leen goes over getting to the lock after getting your opponent to his belly using a Four Post Ride and two techniques - the Lock/Re-Lock and the Scoop.

    Though I have been a coach for 10 years, I competed at a time when "funk" wasn't very popular. The style and moves have always been exotic, mysterious and misunderstood by me. This is the first video where I feel "funk" has really been demystified. - Chester Chen

    Funk wrestling is starting to dominate wrestling, frustrating coaches and wrestlers at every level. NCAA Champion Jordan Leen demonstrates several techniques and the importance of position when it comes to beating the funk wrestler.

    Coach Leen is one of the most prolific clinicians in the country and does an amazing job of breaking down even complicated techniques and positions so even inexperienced wrestlers can understand. He maintains beating funk has less to do with technique and more to do with positioning. He covers the basics of good positioning from leg attacks that will eliminate that threat. His positioning - with your head and chest high, hips underneath you and protecting your feet - allows wrestlers to come out on top over many of the improvised positions caused by scrambles.

    Coach Leen covers exactly what the funk wrestler is looking for and how to protect against it. He explains the importance of position as well as how to wrestle from scramble positions and how to win those positions. He talks about protecting your feet and ankles so your opponent cannot get to their position of advantage. The "leg pass" is the most common of all funk techniques, and learning how to deal with it is a key skill that will make you more confident in not only defending funk, but also in attacking to start with. Grabbing ankles is another common funk skill that is developed to counter leg attacks. Coach Leen shows how just sitting back on your heels is not enough. He also shares some excellent strategies to make this an easy position to counter.

    Once in a scramble position, Coach Leen demonstrates how to get back into good position. Strategies for staying out of "the funk" are given for high single legs, high-crotches and low single leg takedowns.

    Finally, Coach Leen shares real-life examples of how to use good positioning to stay out of scrambles, and how to get back into good position once your position has been broken. With a partner, he demonstrates scrambles from all positions covered in the presentation. They start by showing the worst-case scenario, and then work backwards, one step at a time, until they get back into good position.

    Coach Leen adds several drills that, if used during regular practice, can help protect against funk wrestling This presentation not only helps you defend scramblers but it can also be used to teach some funk.

    Keeping good position will keep you out of scrambles, enabling you to stop the funk. When caught in funk, these principles will help you get back into solid position and win the scramble.

His strength program is based on a core series of movements that focus on increasing a wrestler's power and explosion on the mat.     This is a great tool that gives exercises and set/rep schemes that OSU uses, when they use them and how they vary with weights of athletes so that a coach can integrate it into their strength program and move away from the traditional "power lifting" programs that many schools are using.

    Monday
    Coach Cozart begins by putting the team through a track practice, followed immediately with a circuit in the weight room. From there, Coach moves his team to the mat as they do their basic skills warm-up that includes acrobatics, scrambles, neck work and back arches. The drilling portion of Cozart's practice includes top position work, neutral arm up drilling (horning up), hand fighting, bottom position drilling, and takedowns on your knees from a sprawled opponent. He finishes off practice with 30 minutes of live wrestling.

    Tuesday
    Techniques include hip heists, leg ride counters, and arm up (horn up) drills. Drags and ankle picks are covered from standing position, and arm chop and spiral series are covered from top position. After 30 minutes of live wrestling, Coach Cozart puts his team through a "warm-down", consisting of three sets of rope climbing partnered off with various calisthenics designed to work his team hard.

    Wednesday
    While beginning with the team's standard basic skills drills and ending with live wrestling, this practice focuses more on techniques from the neutral position. Takedowns drilled are single legs, arm drags, duck unders, ankle picks, and firemen carries.

    Thursday
    Tapering down, Coach Cozart puts the team through the most technique-oriented practice of the week, one that he traditionally uses the day before a tournament. Each team member performs his favorite technique from all three starting positions. Coach demonstrates how to troubleshoot a stalemate position from a single leg attack that he has been seeing in live wrestling this week. He also goes over some of his favorite specialty moves. The team focuses on upper body throws including attacks from collar ties, underhooks, whizzers, lateral tie-ups (over-under position), and bear hugs.

    Top wrestling has become increasingly better in recent years so any new tools wrestlers can put in their repertoire will help them win at the highest level. The best top wrestlers are using the claw, tight waist and crab ride to immobilize the bottom wrestler. Coach Moore shows you how to beat these rides with his push back position.

    He begins with the fundamentals of the push back. He covers how to start from the bottom, how to drive through hips, how to crash the opposite side elbow and finally, how to react when the top man defends your positioning. He demonstrates a great drill for the beginning wrestlers that teaches them to switch hips as the top man digs for tight waists from side-to-side.

    From there, there are three ways to go: Stand up, tripod, or attack the head.

    • Stand up: Coach Moore shows how to attack hands properly to not give up wrists. He demonstrates a great drill to attack the top hand and put it into the pocket, which prevents opponents from using the opposite hand to lock up the wrists.
    • Tripod: The goal is to push back into the opponent, getting him to slide forward off your wrestler's shoulders. By continuing to use hand control, your wrestler can clear his hips and escape.
    • Switch: Coach Moore shows how to recover if the tight waist is close to your athlete's belly and also how to recover from the belly. A modified push back drill will get the opponent's weight off of your wrestler.

    Defending the Crab Ride, Tight Waist and Claw

    Crab Ride Defense: Coach Moore covers all three ways to reverse from a crib ride. He demonstrates many common positions and how to clear hips to get a reversal. He finishes by showing how to stand-up from a crab rider.

    Claw Ride Defense: Coach Moore starts by demonstrating how to get into the sit out/push back position when a claw is put in. It is crucial to keep the opponent's hips off and to stay down low. The keys to defending the claw all go back to the sit back position, picking a side and attacking hands. Coach Moore shows some instinctual positions that actually prevent your wrestlers from getting away and how those habits can be broken.

    Near Wrist/Bar Arm Defense: Coach Moore shows a technique that will eliminate a near wrist ride. He demonstrates how to get back to the basic push back position and how to transition from almost going to the back to getting to your feet and away.

    Coach Moore includes five specific drills to help inexperienced wrestlers grasp the fundamental positions needed to be effective, and he shows advanced wrestlers how repeatedly going to these positions can clear any position from the bottom.

    Breakdowns -
    Coach Esposito begins with a discussion of several types of breakdowns, including a spiral and claw, to get into the wrist ride position. He shows how small adjustments in the top referee's position can be made to beat an opponent to the whistle. Learn the proper position for the inside wrist series and how to best utilize your hands and body to prevent your opponent from countering your top work.

    Turns -
    This series teaches wrestlers how to use their whole bodies as leverage to isolate an opponent's arm. This makes it easier to slide an arm through and attack an opponent, earning easy back points. Coach Esposito goes through more than 10 different ways-half nelson, arm bar, Olympic bar, OverBar turns, a snake or Cow Catcher, and even some tilts-to turn an opponent by using their reaction to the wrist ride. What's really helpful about these turns is the fact that they come off reactions, which helps coaches develop chain wrestlers.

Coach Gable now presents some key wrestling drills for you to incorporate into your program that will get the "total wrestling experience," that is a complete mental and physical workout. Gable begins with a brief warm-up session that incorporates pummeling and hip heist drills. These drills will get your wrestlers ready to go all out while fine tuning important positioning techniques. The bulk of Gable's teaching focus on seven drills in a live and combative setting.     Base and Bridge Drill
    Assistant Coach Joe LeBlanc teaches fundamental drills to improve your athletes' flexibility and mat awareness. He emphasizes footwork, moving your feet and creating angles in the neutral position. LeBlanc shows basic drills for maintaining a solid base on the bottom and learning to escape. The Base and Bridge Drill is a drill that can be effective for the experienced middle school wrestler, the high school wrestling and the college wrestler.

    Head Blocking
    Assistant Coach and USA National Team member Nick Simmons reveals his favorite drills for developing head position and for hand fighting from the tie up. These drills are defensive in nature and often can lead to counter attacks. The head is the first line of defense before your opponent can get to your hips. Coach Simmon's Head Block Drill helps train wrestlers to prevent opponents from getting leg attacks. Often, wrestlers are only taught to block with their hands. Simmons emphasizes in this drill to block with your head first and then your hands. When your opponent changes levels, you change levels and head block. Simmons has excellent hip defense and shows an excellent "hip motion" drill to develop confidence when an opponent does get to your legs.

    These competitive practice drills can be used at the grade school, middle school, high school, and college levels of wrestling and will create a new level of energy in your practice room.
